New Features of EPX Express 5

EPX lets you drag and drop import of images like before. Coming shortly, there is a new import event module, that will allow you to import catalog sets from iView, and we are working on other libraries as well.

The major difference with EPX Express 5 and previous versions is the way images are stored and manipulated. The Hi-res images are no longer stored the local database. We originally used the database because most photographers were using film, and images were scanned to a CD. This meant EPX Express had to store all the hi-res images in its own database. This has become cumbersome, as now most photographers use digital format using hi-res camera images.

EPX Express 5 stores only a thumbnail, plus a reference to the image file on your disk. This means you can store 10's of thousands of images in EPX Express 5, and the local database will only be as big as the thumbnails. The local database will be very small. When images are imported, a thumbnail must be created, which, as in 4.1 versions of the software, takes the most time when importing. In EPX Express 5, some highly optimized techniques are employed to make image import go very quickly without sacrificing quality. If you are using jpegs from your camera, you will notice a 10-20 times speed increase in image importing. It is faster for tiffs or other image formats, but jpegs are sped up dramatically.

Note that EPX Express 5 does NOT use Quicktime for image manipulation. All the image manipulation software required for version 5 to perform is included in this download.

There is a new version 5 thumbnail database for each Windows/Mac user login on your computer. If your studio has multiple photographers, this is a great way to keep your events separated by each photographer.

EPX Express 5 takes advantage of special features of images that come from digital cameras that save information about rotation and orientation. So if you try rotating and flipping images in version 5, and if the images contain this information from your camera, the manipulation will be lightning fast.

EPX Express 5 lets you choose your favorite image editor. Go to the OPTIONS tab in the main window of the software, and select your preferred image editor. Then you can hightlight MANY images and select edit/crop in the image menu. It will open all of the images you've selected in your editor, so you can make edits to many images at once. When you save the images in the editor, version 5 will load the edited images back into the event.

One important item to note: Once you import your images, you must leave the images on your disk in their current location for at least the duration of the event. If you move images, EPX Express 5 will not be able to locate them, so it will not be able to process the images later. Before you import, make sure the images are in the desired disk folder.

The Eventpix guest user interface on the web has been re-written to use Flash 8. Your clients can now scan images much faster, watch slide shows, and optionally zoom in on photos using a loupe to see better detail. They can also put 2 images side-by-side for comparison.

Watermarks are now implemented in the guest user interface. They are no longer burned into your images, plus you can choose orientation, size, color and change the text. The images and the image categories can be reordered in EPX Express 5 simply by dragging then with your mouse to the desire position. Categories and images will display on the web in the same order you selected.

For our customers who use one of our partner labs, you will see a brand new Lab Module which gives you more flexibility in creating your orders. You can combine guest orders, and add additional print items to your orders. You can also crop your images right in the Lab Module, while maintaining the correct aspect of the target print.
